Dell Announced Its Newest monitor U2518D with Fake HDR

Dell’s new IPS monitor to feature ‘ Dell HDR ‘. Its a 25-inch WQHD 2560x1440p display. It has 60Hz refresh rate with a 1000:1 static contrast and 178°/178° horizontal and vertical viewing angles.

U2518D is set to offer HDMI 2.0, DP 1.2, mDP 1.2, DP 1.2 out (for MST daisy chaining) and 3.5mm audio out. Further information on the manufacturer’s website. It costs 499$.

Dell HDR is a simulated slash software based HDR mode that responds to HDR10 content.

This display doesn’t support the colour gamut, peak luminance or indeed bit-depth required for a ‘true HDR’ experience. The brightness of U2518D is lower than we’d expect from HDR display. The 350 nit maximum brightness the panel sports is more reminiscent of a regular monitor than the bastard-bright 1,000 nits other HDR panels. All credit goes to Guru3D for this research.
